It really is a pleasure to hear people talking positively about other people even in the event of a bad thing happening. Now, I know there are times when negativity is the only course of action and we must have conflict. How nice would it be if everything went perfectly all the time...ok some of you are going to be negative on that as well, i'll deal!!!
Now this is another instance in which people have been able to get together and make the life of one individual a little better. In the fire service, we have consistently heard about fire departments helping out families with loved ones that are suffered, EMS agencies helping those in their time of need, and law enforcement organizations sharing the pain by bring joy. There are times in which those of up willing to help step up to the plate and make things better for a lot of people.
Spring football practices are starting up all across the nation, in fact many programs have been going for a couple weeks now. That is true with the Cornhuskers of Nebraska who just completed a spring scrimmage which left very few dry eyes in the stands, and this one left one player being carried off the field, a true site to see. If you remember (and if you don't, don't worry the movie will be back on soon)Rudy Ruttiger was and still remains to be the only player ever carried off the field at the University of Notre Dame. The story is one that continues to bring persistence to those that are trying to get into a sport yet they are consistently told no. In this case, the individual carried off the field wasn't a finely tuned precision college athlete, it wasn't even a member of the coaching staff. It was none other than a 7-year old boy named Jack Hoffman.
In the video you see above, Jack is a 7 year old boy that has been suffering from brain cancer. An avid fan of the football team, a player from last years season found his attention toward the kid and now he was helping him out with a dream of his. In this story, Jack was suitted up in the players number 22 jersey, and just like Rudy was placed in the game at the very end. This intense battle was just 1 score away from the victorious going to the other team and that is when the coaches decided to put in the out of the box play. Unlike Rudy, this game was closer in score and a single play was to make the difference.
That is when it happened!!! Jack took off around the far end, reverse course and come back to the near side. It was there that he met a wall of protection which he rode more than 69 years to score the winning touchdown. Jack was then swallowed up by the red and white of Nebraska and then emerged the youthful victor carried on the shoulder of linemen on both sides also celebrating in Jack's victory. For after this he would undergo a tremendous load of chemotherapy to try and destroy the cancerous cells.
When all was thought to be complete, the story continues. Nothing was more famous then when famous coaches of past would take your play and put it on the telestrater to show just how good you did. Jack was brought up on ESPN Sportscenter and nobody could believe how well he made it through the defenses seemingly protected line of scrimmage. They should his reverse taking the ball from one side of the field to the next until he made it past the thick white line of the end zone.
Congratulations Jack. You are an inspiration to us all!!
